Last Sunday, we held the second part of our Emergent Literacy Nanny Training Series. This month, we discussed early literacy skills such as Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension for the PreK and Kindergarten levels.
September Nanny Training Recap: Literacy Development, part 1
This past Sunday, we had a great turnout of nannies motivated to help their charges develop early reading skills.
By “early reading skills” we are referring to Preschool to End-of-Kindergarten level, no matter the child’s age. A child at this level may just be becoming aware of things like letters and sounds, or they may be able to sound out simple words, such as shop, that, and chip.
Anything in between these two points is the target of discussion in our Emergent Literacy series.
September’s class was the first in a two-part series on literacy development; the focus was on one component that is the foundation of literacy: Phonological Awareness.

In our free nanny training this month, we focused on strategies that the nannies can use to prevent most of a child’s problem behaviors, and appropriate responses when the behaviors to occur that will decrease the chances of them happening in the future. This involves supporting the child and teaching him or her a better way to meet their need or want.

Yesterday, we held the second Free Nanny Training session in our three-part series on Child Behavior.
In this session, we introduced the Four Functions of Behavior, and explained how to figure out the reason behind a child’s problem behaviors.

At Thrive Family Consulting, we kicked off the New Year with a new Nanny Training Series on Child Behavior. This will be a three-part series, with the first session’s topic being: The Science of Behavior and Positive Reinforcement.
We spent some time introducing the Science of Human Behavior, and the definitions of reinforcement and punishment. We then focused the rest of the class on the topic of Positive Reinforcement - the most effective means of changing human behavior.
